Headless Shopify development with Hydrogen

Headless can be useful when your storefront needs a level of frontend control or integration that a theme does not provide. It also creates a custom application to operate, so the decision should be based on requirements rather than a promise of faster pages.

I develop Shopify storefronts with Hydrogen and help review whether headless is the right approach. Content editing, app compatibility, SEO, deployment and maintenance are considered alongside the customer experience.

01 / Detail

When a theme may still be the better choice

If an appropriate theme can deliver the required design and features, it can be simpler to manage. A theme also retains established editing workflows and often makes app installation more straightforward.

Headless becomes more compelling when the architecture or experience genuinely needs a separate frontend. We compare that benefit with the extra development, testing and ongoing ownership before committing to a rebuild.

Scope the storefront as a complete application

A Hydrogen project needs more than product-page styling. We define navigation, content, product and collection data, search, cart, account and checkout handoff, alongside caching, error states and analytics.

Existing apps and integrations need review because a feature designed for a Shopify theme may not drop into a custom frontend. A CMS or external service is selected only when the requirement warrants it, not added silently.

Preserve discoverability during the change

A storefront migration includes route and URL planning, redirects where applicable, initial-page content, metadata, sitemap and internal links. We check those signals alongside customer-facing behavior rather than assuming a framework handles all SEO automatically.

A headless build does not guarantee better rankings, speed or conversion. Those depend on implementation, content, traffic and measurement.

Plan deployment and maintenance

The project needs an agreed hosting/deployment approach, preview environments, configuration ownership and a maintenance plan for APIs and dependencies. Hydrogen can use Oxygen, but hosting choices and platform eligibility should be confirmed for the store.

Handoff defines who can deploy, update content, review errors and commission future changes. That clarity matters as much as the initial launch.

Headless questions

Does Hydrogen require Plus? Headless is not inherently Plus-only. Store, hosting and feature eligibility are checked against the proposed setup.

Will all our apps work? Not automatically. We inventory their functions and assess headless support or replacement work.

Will our team retain editing controls? Editing is part of the architecture decision. We define how content will be managed before building.

Share the experience you need, current limitations, apps, content workflow and long-term maintenance expectations. We can decide whether Hydrogen is appropriate or whether a theme improvement is the more practical route.

For US projects, include your team’s time zone if it matters for reviews or meetings.
