Custom Shopify apps for the way your business works
When native Shopify or a suitable existing app cannot support an important workflow, a custom application can fill the gap. The goal is a solution your team can use and maintain—not extra software for its own sake.
I develop merchant-specific Shopify apps and tools, with the workflow, permissions, deployment and support responsibilities defined before building.
Check whether a custom app is needed
Some requirements can be handled through native configuration, Shopify Flow, a theme change or an established app. I review those options before recommending bespoke development.
Custom work is more appropriate when required behavior, an internal process or a data connection is not covered adequately. We also consider who will own and maintain it after delivery.
Define what the application must do
Scope can include internal admin tools, operational workflows, custom store functionality and applications connected to external services. We identify users, data, actions, exceptions and acceptance criteria rather than relying on a vague feature list.
For integration-heavy work, the system of record, sync direction and failure handling are important. For checkout or business rules, the extension or Function and its plan eligibility are checked separately. Related detail is on the integrations and Plus pages.
Permissions, testing and ownership are part of the build
The scope defines store-data access, backend hosting where required, authentication, test cases, deployment and documentation. Event-driven integrations need handling for repeated or missed events and a way to reconcile important records.
Maintenance planning includes supported API versions, dependencies and responsibility for updates. These are operating requirements, not details to leave until after launch.
Custom distribution is different from an App Store product
An app for a specific merchant normally uses custom distribution. An application intended for many merchants uses a different public-distribution route and requires Shopify review. This service does not promise a public listing or approval by default.
If you call the requirement a “private app”, we can clarify the current custom-app approach. Private apps are legacy terminology, not the recommended new-build label.
App development questions
Do I need a complete specification? No, but describing the workflow and failure cases helps. A review may be needed to turn that into implementation scope.
Can an existing app be repaired? Share the code, deployment details and issue; a takeover review comes before a commitment.
What determines the estimate? Features, data, authentication, external systems, distribution, testing and ongoing ownership all matter.
Start with the workflow
Tell me what your team does now, what needs to happen instead, which systems are involved and the store's plan. We can decide whether a custom application is the right solution.
For US projects, include your team’s time zone if it matters for reviews or meetings.
